Ted Hogarth
Ted Hogarth is a reed player active in the Chicago area, performing with the Chicago Jazz Ensemble and frequently as a studio musician. His primary instrumental focus is the baritone saxophone and bass clarinet, though he plays most reeds. Hogarth is also an arranger and composer, with five original works on the debut CD featured here on the Jazz Archives. As a sideman, Hogarth has performed with such top players as Jon Faddis, Charlie Haden, Roy Hargrove, and Nick Brignola, among many others.
Hogarth has traveled extensively, throughout Europe, the Middle East, and Cuba, all of which have impacted his musical output. Most recently, he studied in Havana, Cuba at the Nacional de Esceula de Arte, and performed with such local artists as Ng La Banda, Mezcla, and Bellita y Jazztumbata. Hogarth is currently on faculty at Columbia College in Chicago, and has a large number of private students.
This debut recording, Steps Taken, is performed by the Ted Hogarth Collective, which likewise features Neal Alger, guitar; Tom Knific, bass; Darren Scorza, drums; and, on the final cut, Kevin Cole, piano. We are delighted to have them among our first artists at the Jazz Archives.
~ Reviews ~
"Ted Hogarth admires Harry Carney, but also sounds like Pepper Adams - this is burly baritone whose notes carry attitude… [Steps Taken] is an embarrassment of riches: the song choice, performances and musicians are all impeccable."
www.jazzusa.com
"Hogarth is a musician who is in tune with the rich tradition of Jazz on Steps Taken, an album where he and his quintet cavort gleefully with both original and classic material… Hogarth romps playfully through the up-tempo tunes, casually rolling out improvisations while keeping the essence of the songs in the forefront."
Cadence Magazine
"Steps Taken is a fine opening CD for this talented instrumentalist/composer. It's a session that allows the listener plenty of opportunity to sit back and fully digest and enjoy what he/she is hearing."
